Rotary E-Club One at the Los Angeles RI Convention

By Public Relations Chairman, Dieter Broehdl

Fixing the Australian produced posters was an exacting task because PP Chris is a person who likes everything perfect.  Our  “wall up power dream team”  Chris, Dieter,  and Tim managed to attach the posters!

The main booth of the three Rotary eClubs

One day before the RI Convention began it shows Ernesto and Cecilia of Rotary E-Club of Latinoamerica.

It was a corner booth at the Rotary International Highway., a broad aisle, where many Rotarians passed by.

In front of our extra “bonus”  booth, next door to our main booth, where we explained the goals of Rotary e-clubs

Rotary e-clubs are just like traditional Rotary clubs, except that we use the Internet as our primary enabler for the operation of the club and the management of projects.  In general,  our members  do not live in one town but are  spread over the global world.

My role in this Rotary year is to coordinate our PR campaigns, working in conjunction with  Rotarians Bill Bro and David Forward.

And you know , stories are the core of a good article. If you have stories and pictures to attribute to an effective PR please pass it to me to make our Rotary eClub One more visible and understandable for all other Rotarians who are members of traditional Rotary clubs.

Rotary International Convention 2008 in Los Angeles

Now that I have returned to Germany after the RI Convention in Los Angeles I want to share information of our success at the booth in the House of Friendship and to show the good fellowship we experienced.

Since we were on the waiting list for the space of a booth in the House of Friendship, I asked  Marco Klappenberg , President of Rotary eClub  of Latinoamerica, if his Rotary e-club would share their booth with our club .

They accepted and, fortuitously,  their President 2008/2009 Ernesto Neumann, lives in the German town of Darmstadt as I do. Before this we did not know about each other!

So the planning was quite easy, particularly  with the strong support of our PP Chris Joscelyne, and we had superb displays at our booth.

Rotary E-Club of London Centenary joined us so we were three Rotary e-clubs working together as one team. Our booth was a very good presentation of the world of Rotary e-clubs  and we had a lot of constructive discussions with visitors from many countries.

Fortunately the space for a booth next to our assigned place was unoccupied so we could  enlarge our space by hundred percent!

At the booth and  In the discussions with Rotarians of traditional Rotary clubs there were three main points that show the value of Rotary eClubs. They support Rotary International by:

A: Retaining  busy Rotarians who would otherwise leave Rotary because their vocation prevents them from meeting the attendance requirements of a traditional Rotary club.

B: As opportunity for the children and grandchildren of Rotarians, who until now cannot join Rotary because of their extremely demanding business life.  By joining a Rotary e-club they can participate online at a flexible time, and hour day or night.

C: The chance for people with health problems to stay  in their traditional Rotary club, by meeting their make-up attendance obligations online.

We have heard many personal stories of how Rotary e-clubs have aided the make-up obligations of Rotarians who have had problems attending their traditional Rotary club, due to ill health, urgent family matters, or business-related demands on their time.

The annual Meeting

Our annual meeting took place on Monday June 16th at one of America’s most magnificent private clubs, located in Los Angeles

Here some pictures:

Past President Chris introduced us to “Two Up”, an Australian game of chance with a lot of laughs.  Chris throws two coins in the air and everybody has to predict if the two coins will rest on the floor showing the “head” side up or the “tail” side up, or one showing a “head” and the other showing a “tail”.

All participants predict the landing of the coins, by using hands to show two heads, two tails or one of each.  Those who continued to guess correctly remained in the game while others were eliminated. Prizes were beautiful Australian opal pendants donated by Jamie Costello.

Final evening in Los Angeles with Past RI President Frank Devlyn and his wife Gloria Rita, together with Rotarians from Germany, Panama, USA, Australia, and Mexico.

Please feel  inspired by the pictures above to join us at our next Annual Meeting at the RI Convention in Birmingham 2009.

Any Rotarian, from any Rotary club in the world is invited to join us at our next Annual Dinner at Edgbaston Golf Club in Birmingham on the Monday evening of the 2009 RI Convention.

More information about this event will be published in a special article on our website.

President elect Angus says: ”Thank you President Tim for your great work in the year 2007/2008 for Rotary eClub One.

PP Chris and PE Angus, two of our Aussie members, relax in the bar at the end of our dinner.
They are not slipping from their chairs,
but simply demonstrating the laid back style
of Australian Rotarians at the end of a long day!
