In the summer of 2020, Rotary eClub One provided a borehole to Olurunsogo community in Southwestern Nigeria. Before this project, the sole water source in the community was an old water well. Community members had to put their buckets and other containers into this open well to scoop water out of it. Due to its depth, the water was often dirty after one or two people have used it.
Whenever there was rainfall, runoff water from the surrounding area also got deposited into the well.
Implementation of the project involved the collaborative efforts of Rotary eClub One, Rotary E-Club of Greater Nigeria, and the community. Rotary E-Club of Greater Nigeria did the initial assessment and coordinated the meetings with the community stakeholders. The community provided the land for the borehole and also committed to maintaining the facility post-completion. The project was funded by Rotary eClub One with member ‘Buchi Anikpezi serving as the project champion.
Upon completion, the borehole had five access points and two 3000 liter overhead storage tanks to ensure there is no interruption the water supply at all times. Through this project, a safe and hygienic pipe-borne water source is now available to all 1200 residents of Olurunsogo community.
