Scholarship programs for Club Rotario Puerto Vallarta Sur
Rotary eClub One John Powell [JP] received a $500USD Community grant from the Club in November of 2015 to
be used to assist students of poor families in the Puerto Vallarta
region of Mexico.
JP has been administrating one of the
scholarship programs for Club Rotario Puerto Vallarta Sur in the city of
Puerto Vallarta for the past 20 years. In 1996 he took the program from
a "Club program" to an "International program". We started with one
program and ten students.
We now have six separate (but the same)
programs providing scholarships to over 400 students. Annual
scholarship amounts are US$200 for Middle School students, US$300 for
High School students and US$350 for University students. The
scholarship amounts do not cover all costs incurred by the students but
it does provide the family with enough money they are able to keep the
students in school.
In order to qualify for a scholarship the
family must have the financial need and the student must have a minimum
GPA of 8.5 out of 10 and they must maintain that qualification in order
to stay in the program.
Sponsors are Rotarians, Rotary Clubs and other interested individuals from Canada and the United States.
The
grant he received provided scholarships for two Middle School students,
Ismael de Jesus Garcia and Andrea Pong Reyes, for the school year
2015-2016. He will be requesting another grant for the school year
2016-2017 in the new Rotary year.
