By Dave Talbot, Crutches for Africa
Recently
the world focused on the issues surrounding the disabled. Crutches 4 Africa,
working together with NGO groups in Nairobi went into Kibera slum protected by
an armed contingent of police with automatic weapons.
Kibera
was recently marked as the world's third worst slum and has only recently
acquired some sources of water.
Scenes of alleys choked with garbage and children playing in piles of
rotting refuse are common. It was
in this setting that we went into to deliver mobility devices to people that
lack almost everything. We were
greeted with rejoicing and after a round of speeches we delivered what we had
brought and turned it over to the disability group leaders, thus giving them
the tools needed to empower the people.
We
have been here before and God willing, we will return again to build upon the
foundation of good will and hope.
We departed with the prayers of those there that remain in that place
called Kibera, still ringing in our ears.
